Emmitt at 6 Months

I know! I can hardly believe it myself! Emmitt Boyd Hutchins is exactly half of a year old already! What a joy he is to have in our family! Joy Boy Jr. as we like to call him!

At 6 months Emmitt is sitting up for about two minutes on his own before either slumping forward or falling to the side. He is weighs about 19 lbs. and is about 26 1/2 inches long. He is wearing size 6-9 month clothing and size 4 diapers. We also recently switched him to the size 4 nipple on his bottles (Avent is what we use and they increase in size as babies grow older).

(Ignore the full diaper! This was right before bathtime!)

He still takes a paci at night and naps and has really started to grow attached to his "lovey" that Aunt Ola made him! It is so sweet! I had her make two more just so I could make sure to have one in the diaper bag, one at Grandmom's and one at home!

Sesame street blanket on his face and paci barely hanging on!

Emmitt is SUCH a sweet baby! He really does go with the flow for the most part. He is always smiling and laughing. The only time he really cries is if he is super tired or if he is super hungry. When he is hungry he is an ANIMAL! He is starting to pull the bottle to his mouth and holds it (albeit temporarily) all by himself. He sleeps great at night and will tell us when he is ready to go to bed if we aren't there quick enough. He is getting to where he likes to be fed, held and rocked to sleep at night. I remember Jesstine being much like that too! He is still not on a schedule during the day and even at night we have been trying to put him to bed slightly earlier by gradually starting 15 minutes earlier each night. So far we have been getting him to bed by at least 8:30. I think he could go sooner, but it is harder with the second child!!! As far as daytime goes, it is hit or miss. He probably COULD be on a schedule, but right now it is so difficult because of Jesstine's school pick up and drop off! So, perhaps when summer starts we can get him on a day time sleep schedule as well. As it is, he has 2-4 naps a day. The morning nap varies from 45 minutes to sometimes (on a good day) 2 hours. The afternoon nap is much the same. Sometimes he just has to have a "snappy" in the evenings. I don't like to do this because often times that means he will be harder to get to sleep for bedtime depending upon when said "snappy" occurs. Then there are days where none of this is true and his day is filled with "snappies" much like a newborn! Again, I think that is more my fault, not his!

This boy LOVES to cuddle! Several times a day (whether he is tired or not) he will just lay his head on my shoulder next to my neck and just cuddle.

He is getting better about entertaining himself now that he rolls EVERYWHERE. He was rolling with a purpose last month, but this month it has become even more focused. He is also starting to refine the use of his little hands. It is still a battle though. Anytime ANYTHING is close to his hands, he clamps down! Case in point, the flower that Jesstine brought home from school for Mother's Day. It is permanently lopsided.
Jumping bean toy he figured out how to activate on his own instead of relying on a big sister who loves his toy just as much (if not more) than he does!

He figured out how to get his toes in his mouth!

He likes to eat when we eat. Typically he eats at least one whole serving of Gerber level one baby food. Lately it has been squash or applesauce. Recently I introduced sweet potatoes and he REALLY likes it (to Daddy's dismay). So far the only "table" food we have tried has been the puffs and little tiny pieces of bread or other things that we have been eating. He has liked everything except for peas. He usually only eats (other than bottle) about one time a day again not because he doesn't want to, but because it is hard to fit it in with everything else going on. He still only eats about 6-6.5 ounces in a bottle about every 3-4 hours. He has been better about stretching it to 4 hours. Just depends on the moment! He likes puffs, but is still getting the hang of putting them in his own mouth. He pretty much doesn't eat the cereals (rice and oatmeal) anymore unless I mix applesauce in with it.

Well, I think that about covers it. We don't go in for his 6 month check for a couple more weeks (because we got behind after his hospital stint at 7 weeks). So here are the beloved chair pictures!

Happy Half Birthday Joy Boy Junior!

In Him,
The Hutchins Family

P.S. Stay tuned for pictures from his 6 month photo shoot from our friendly photographer, Danita!
